Whether your pooch’s day consists of running through the woods, fetching a ball, recuperating from an injury, or just snoozing while he keeps you company, he’ll need a quality bed for restful, restorative sleep.
But many dog beds on the market do not have the materials and construction to keep the bed from flattening out as your dog sleeps. This creates pressure points which can cause soreness and stiff joints, giving your best friend the exact opposite of a restorative sleep!
The best choice for a lot of dogs is an orthopedic dog bed, especially for large or older dogs who are more prone to joint and ligament problems, injuries, medical problems, and muscle stiffness.
I’ve compiled the 8 best orthopedic dog beds on the market today that I feel are worth your hard earned dollars!
The ones chosen are the best beds for each class of dog since the weight a bed needs to hold without bottoming out is a main consideration when determining which bed is right for your dog. Check them out below!
XXLarge/Giant Orthopedic Dog Beds
A dog breed is considered giant or extra large at about 90 lbs. and over, such as a great dane or a mastiff. In order to fully support dogs of this size without creating pressure points, high quality materials and construction is an absolute must!
But when investing in dog beds of this caliber, you also want to know that they will last for years and you won’t be needing to replace them often.
In addition to passing my quality test, the first two beds have 10 year warranties, which ensures that the companies are creating a great bed!
BUDDYREST Crown Supreme Memory Foam Dog Bed
We decided to invest in the BUDDYREST Crown Supreme when our German Shepherd, Sasha, tore her other CCL. Because of complications from the surgery that fixed her right leg, we couldn’t risk another one.
So she needed to be sleeping on a bed in the family room where we all spend a lot of time, and it had to have excellent durability and quality to ensure her comfort.
We were not disappointed, and she loves it! Here’s the features of this terrific bed:
This orthopedic bolster bed is made with a base layer of high quality 4.5 lb. memory foam that supports a layer of gel infused memory foam designed to keep your pooch cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The bolster is filled with a high loft fluff and is oversized to give your dog comfort and security.
This bed distributes your dog’s weight across the bed, which evenly supports their joints and promotes much better blood flow while eliminating any pressure points. You can be comfortable with the quality of their memory foam since it is certified to be:
- Made without ozone depleters or flame retardants
- Made without mercury, lead, or other heavy metals
- Made without formaldehyde
- Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
The Crown Supreme uses a soft suede fabric they call Crypton. This is a very comfortable fabric that is 100% waterproof, meaning that no other waterproof liner is required that may make your dog hot when he sleeps, a great feature in my book! It also has antibacterial qualities that resist stains and odors and mean less washing for you.
In fact, in our experience, the Crypton fabric does not smell, and dog hair vacuums up easily. The fabric is probably the feature of the bed that I’m most impressed with!
Here’s a great video by the makers of BUDDYREST beds that will show you the materials and construction used in these wonderful dog beds:
This bed comes in 3 sizes and 4 colors to fit any decor. The one downside is the price, it is more expensive than many orthopedic beds on the market. However, the adage, “You get what you pay for” is very true here. You pay more, but you definitely get more!
In the long run, an initial investment in a BuddyRest Crown Supreme bed could be more economical because you’ll be replacing cheaper beds more often.
Big Barker 7″ Orthopedic Dog Bed With Pillow Top
After seeing how much an orthopedic dog bed helps Sasha and how much her brother, Tahlen, loves to sleep on the bed, we purchased a Big Barker with a headrest for him.
He loves to sleep wherever he can lay his head on a pillow or armrest, so this looked like a bed that would fit his style of sleeping well–and we weren’t wrong, he loves it!
Big Barker dog beds are calibrated for large dogs and it definitely fits the bill for even the largest breeds. They created this bed with what is called 3 stage foam engineering.
What this means is that the base of support is 3″ of high quality polyurethane H45 foam which does not compress more than 1/4 of it’s thickness. This is placed between two 2″ layers of H10 comfort foam with 4″ contoured foam headrest. The result is a super comfortable bed that is fully able to support the joints and body of up to a 300 lb. dog.
Now the fact that this bed is not made with true memory foam can be a downside for some dog owners. However, the high caliber of foam used in Big Barker beds are certified to the same standards as those of quality memory foam beds.
The company verifies:
“The American made, certified exible polyurethane foam used in all Big Barker products meets the CertiPUR-US® program standards for content, emissions, and durability, and is analyzed by independent, accredited testing laboratories.”
Everything that we’ve experienced with this bed supports the standard of quality that Big Barker claims. So I feel more than comfortable recommending this bed to you as a top rated orthopedic dog bed!
Want to see the difference between a regular dog bed on the market today and the quality of a Big Barker? Check out this short video:
The Big Barker comes in 3 sizes and 4 colors. You can get it with or without a headrest, upgrade to a waterproof liner and replacement covers are available. The price of this bed compared to the size is very economical, especially when considering the 10 year warranty.
Extra Large Orthopedic Dog Beds
If your dog is somewhere between 55 and 90 pounds, they may need an extra large dog bed. Either of the previous beds would be wonderful for a dog in this size range.
But for those with large snugglers, I found the bed below that is bound to give them sweet dreams!
PetFusion Ultimate Jumbo Dog Bed
While most people think of small dogs as nesters who love to curl up to sleep, large dogs can be snugglers too. Years later, we still laugh at how our lovable 100 lb. black labrador could never understand why he couldn’t curl up in my 10 year old daughter’s lap to take his nap!
The PetFusion Ultimate Jumbo bed would’ve been just the right pick for him as it is a bolster bed. The 6″ of solid memory foam provide a good base to support up to a 200 lb. dog, and the recycled polyfilled bolsters provide the security and warmth to keep any size snuggler happy.
For medium to large dogs, they also offer a smaller size with 4″ of memory foam, and you can buy matching blankets and replacement covers.
Check out this video from PetFusion to see the features and options available:
This bed now comes in 3 colors–Chocolate Brown, Sandstone, and Slate Gray. So there’s a color that will look nice no matter what your home decor is.
There is a downside to this bed, while the name states “waterproof”, it is only water resistant. The cover is tear resistant and easy to clean, but the name is misleading since they only verify the bed to be resistant to water.
However, many customers are very satisfied with the water resistant qualities of the cover and give it great ratings.
Overall, if you’re looking for an economical choice for a large bolster bed that provides good support, you’ll be happy with this PetFusion bed!
Large Orthopedic Dog Beds
Dogs that fall between 24 to 55 pounds may need a large orthopedic bed.
Those that are on the low end of the scale could fit well on a medium. So you’ll want to look at your dog’s length and style of sleeping to see what size bed will be best.
KOPEKS Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed
For those looking for a large bed that provides good support for their dog’s joints and body, but with a smaller price tag, this is one to consider!
This large size bed has 5.5″ of premium hypo-allergenic memory foam with a 2.5″ headrest.
It comes with a waterproof removable liner and an anti-slip bottom. You can choose between 2 colors and also a jumbo and small size. The jumbo size has 7″ of memory foam and a 3″ headrest, and it is large enough for many extra large breeds.
Owners of dogs over 100 lbs. have reported that this bed provides good support and they’re very happy with it.
Check out this quick video from KOPEKS:
I don’t see the KOPEKS orthopedic bed matching the durability and warranty of a Buddyrest or Big Barker. But it’s a great option for those on a budget and will provide a good, restorative sleep for your pooch.
In fact, our daughter bought this bed for her dog, Chief, and is 100% happy with the quality, looks, and the comfort it provides him.
As far as any downsides to this bed, some purchasers have reported that the headrest doesn’t expand all the way or the bed takes a long time to fully expand. A couple others also relayed that the zipper broke after unzipping the cover just a few times. But it does appear that these problems are rare.
Overall, purchasers of this KOPEKS bed are happy with it, and give it great ratings!
Dogbed4less Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed
Dogbed4less has a really great bed for those looking to keep their pooch cool in the summer and warm in the winter!
This bed is designed with 3.2 lb. hypoallergenic gel-infused memory foam that is 4″ thick. The high quality memory foam will keep your dog cool and warm when needed, and it has less allergens than many beds on the market.
Looking for a waterproof liner? This has it along with 2 external covers–1 navy blue denim and 1 brown Microsuede.
The price for this bed is excellent for the quality, but with only 4″ of memory foam, I can’t recommend it for extra large and giant dog breeds. I just don’t see it having the ability to keep these breeds from creating pressure points as they sleep.
But for dogs in the 24-55 pound range and lower, this bed will provide the cooling and support needed to give your dog a great night’s sleep!
Medium Orthopedic Dog Beds
If your dog is between 15 and 26 pounds, it’s considered a medium size breed. Even though you aren’t dealing with the heavier weight of a larger dog, you still want a supportive bed made with quality materials.
Any of the above beds have smaller sizes that you’ll love, plus I found this BarksBar bed that will be great for any medium size dog!
BarksBar Snuggly Sleeper Orthopedic Dog Bed
I’ve had dozens of dogs in my life, and most of the small to medium ones were snugglers. If yours is the same, this orthopedic bed could be just what you’re looking for!
The outside dimensions are 32″x22″, and the inside is 26″x16″. Do you have more than one small pooch that likes to sleep together? Then this bed is perfect!
It has 4″ of a solid and grooved orthopedic foam base to help alleviate pressure points. Around the base is an extremely comfortable rim cushion that your snuggler will love!
The soft polyester covering is quilted, removable, and machine washable. Another feature that I like is the non-slip covering on the bottom of the bed. There’s no worries about sliding if the bed is on a tiled or wood floor.
For the money, this bed has great value and is recommended for medium or small dogs.
Small Orthopedic Dog Beds
A lot of dog owners think that small dogs, which weigh up to 18 pounds, can sleep on any bed because they don’t weigh much. However, they still need a supportive orthopedic bed to help them get a healthy, restorative sleep.
Check out the following 2 beds your small pooch will love!
Better World Super Comfort Bolster Dog Bed
This quality bolster bed is one of my favorite! It’s created with 5″ of premium memory foam for excellent support, a canvas cover with a thick fleece pad and waterproof liner.
Many orthopedic dog beds reduce the thickness of the memory foam in their small and medium size beds, but you still get the full 5″ in this small bed. Combine that with the durability of the canvas and fleece cover, and you’ve got a bed that will last!
The bolsters provide the comfort and security that many small dogs need, so you can be sure your pooch will get a great restful sleep.
The Super Comfort Bed comes in 2 colors and 3 sizes, and has good support for your medium to large size dog as well. The price is very economical for the caliber of bed.
One downside is that there are no replacement covers available at this time, but the company has verified that they are in the process of being manufactured soon.
Brindle 4″ Solid Memory Foam Orthopedic Dog Bed
This bed is made with 2″ of comfort memory and 2″ of high density support foam. It has a soft velour cover that is hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites. It is a very comfortable bed that will help relieve achy joints in your small dog.
I’m recommending this for small dogs up to 20-25 lbs. It does come in medium and large, however, for orthopedic purposes the density and quality of foam is not adequate to support larger dogs and eliminate pressure points.
Dogs Deserve The Best Orthopedic Dog Beds!
There are literally hundreds of dog beds on the market today, and many of them claim to be orthopedic beds. But they don’t have the quality of materials and construction to truly give your dog the right support.
The beds I’ve reviewed are the best orthopedic dog beds worth your money. I know that you can find one that is just right for your beloved pooch!
Do you have a quality orthopedic dog bed that you love and would like to share? Tell us about it in the comments below!
This article really hit home for me. It made me think of my dog ‘pumpkin.’ She was 16 yrs. old and I had to get her an orthopedic bed for her old bones. She loved it! When an old dog hurt, they can’t tell you what’s wrong. Having an orthopedic bed is a big difference from lying around on carpet. I realized as dogs get older, they need this type of support for their bones. Orthopedic beds are very comfortable for the animal and worth the cost.
I’ll bet Pumpkin got great comfort from her orthopedic bed. A good quality bed is definitely well worth the cost for any dog!
Holla Janelle, good to see you share these 8 best orthopedic dog beds in 2020. I love the fact that these beds are of different sizes. However, I’d prefer the one you have used before which is the Buddyrest Crown Supreme… I love the fact that it is large and has 10 years guarantee; huge! Moreso, your experience with this particular bed is truly amazing…
We have the Crown Supreme in our living room where we spend a lot of time, and Sasha is in this bed usually the whole time. I truly believe that this bed is instrumental in keeping her healthy and active.
The quality of construction is as good as what they advertise, and I can see why they confidently offer the 10 year warranty!
Many thanks to you for sharing such an excellent article with us .I have a dog and this is a very good friend of mine .My dog is a little bigger and that’s why I needed a bed that could carry loads and not get holes. So I’m looking at the Buddyrest bed given in your article and it seems to me the best orthopedic bed. The bolster is a feature my dog will really love because he is a snuggler–thank you!
You’re welcome–I’m sure he’s going to love his Buddyrest as much as Sasha loves hers!
I must say, very informative article. I never thought of this as dogs also need a bed. But this is a very unique topic this is the first time I saw something like this on the internet usually we humans search for things related to our basic needs. I don’t have a dog at my home but will be getting one soon. I would definitely share this with my neighbors also that they should get an orthopedic dog bed for their dog. Keep sharing knowledge.
I will, and thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!
Quality memory foam is the best support for dogs because of its durability and resiliency. It is designed to conform to your dog’s body and fill in any gaps. It redistributes the body weight making way to support and ensure that pressure points are well distributed. I have purchased one of the early models of dog beds which in no way can give support like the ones you recommended. Our country doesn’t advertise well this type of dog necessity that’s why I haven’t known about it when we had our first family dog. She passed away just recently that’s why we got a new one for the kids. I would definitely consider to buy it so that our little pup can get all the comfort she needs. Thanks for sharing this with us!
You are welcome!
Our pooch is currently expectant and she has no desire to even lift up her head. She loves to sleep and I see how the orthopedic bed will definitely suit her.TheBuddyrest crown looks like one I would go for. She always loves something fluffy and warm. I like that it comes in larger sizes, I believe it will fit her and her puppies before we gift a few puppies away Big Barker .with the pillow tops looks great too.I just love how these beds have been made with high end technology to ensure that the dog is comfortable. Really considerate of the brands. Thank you for these suggestions.
Technology has definitely extended to orthopedic dog beds, and the quality is so awesome for ensuring that dogs get a great restorative sleep. Both the BuddyRest and Big Barker beds are fantastic and well worth the money!
Unfortunately I tried to by from buddyRest, but thank so long for them shipping that I resolvê-lo cancel my order. I hope if they products are really good, that they could improve in shipment. Thank you for your help.
That’s disappointing to hear. That’s the first I’ve heard of it taking a long time to ship, hopefully it’s just a one time anomaly. Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to share your experience!
I didn’t even realize orthopedic dog beds existed. Thank you for the enlightening article. These beds would be so awesome for retired racing and police dogs, as well as other athletic and working breeds. Frankly, I wouldn’t mind sleeping on one!
I’ve seen old dogs shuffling along and turning around and around on their beds before finally just plopping down and looking uncomfortable. Poor things. It would have been so wonderful for them to have had these cozy comfy options. I’m really glad you shared this information. I think all dog owners should know about these!
I agree! Until our Sasha had her injury, we didn’t know anything about orthopedic dog beds. Now that we do, we will always have a quality bed for our dogs!
Hi janelle,
I just was viewing your site and just came across your post about 8 Best Orthopedic Dog Beds Worth Your Money. My wife and i used to have a Malamute Husky about 2 years ago. I wished i would of had this information then as he developed bad arthritis and deteriorated rather quickly being a big dog. This would of been helpful then. I did read a couple of your post and was quite impressed.
As for that I like you website and glad you didn’t use many colors and just stuck to black and white. I is rather easy on the eyes and easy to read.
Great job.
I’m glad you enjoyed my site and found the information helpful!
Thank you for coming up with this great review, I have been on the look out for the best orthopedic dog bed around and from your review I do think I will go for the Big Barker bed. It seems it offers amazing comfort and value and the pillow top is an extra addition.
The Big Barker is an excellent choice, and I hope your dog loves it!
Thanks for an awesome post! I have a large lab who is 80 pounds. She’s only 3 now, but I am always concerned that she may develop arthritis or hip problems. These beds seem so great, I know she would love them! I am bookmarking this page and I will be purchasing one for her for Christmas. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome! I grew up with labs and just love them. Years ago, our black lab, Malcolm, started getting arthritis when he was about 11, and I wish I’d known about orthopedic beds back then.
I’m a firm believer that all dogs need a great supportive orthopedic bed, and you can’t go wrong with any of the ones I reviewed!
Hi Janelle,
Thanks for this sharing. When I google the birthday gift for my friends’ puppy – Justin, your article just jumped out of my search. I didn’t notice an orthopedic dog bed until I read your article, and I think it’s also the time to get my dog the first one. I notice that my dog will eventually have some issue on their body, and I am prepared for this. So, if this orthopedic dog bed could prevent something, I think it’s good for all dog owners to try.
I also would like to know any blanket that you recommend for a dog too? It will be good to know from a person with more experience.
I’m so glad you found my post helpful! You’re very right that an orthopedic dog is beneficial for dogs of any age or health. Getting good, restorative sleep will keep your dog as healthy as possible throughout his life.
I choose dog blankets that are soft, don’t create a lot of static, and durable enough to be washed frequently. My 2 dogs both absolutely love the microfiber blankets, and I can recommend this PetFusion blanket for quality and price–PetFusion Premium Dog Blanket.
Thank you for this informative article about the best orthopedic dog beds worth the money. This was perfect timing for me, as I have a 10 year old German Shepherd who of course, has bad hips. We were just at the vet because my favorite buddy seems a little more sore than usual. In the past, my dog Manny has slept on the bed with me but lately he no longer wants to jump up on the bed and has been sleeping on the carpeted floor. I feel for my old man and so I am looking into different things to make life easier and more comfortable for him like a ramp to get into the car and a soft dog bed for the floor. After reading your reviews on the subject, I believe I am going with the PetFusion Ultimate Jumbo bed. I like the size, it is big but it will not completely take over my bedroom like some of the larger ones and I love the color as it matches my decor and it will still give him the comfort and support my dog needs for a good night’ rest. thank you so much for sharing your recommendations and your knowledge.
You picked a great bed, and I have no doubt Manny will get wonderful rest with it!
We got “KOPEKS ORTHOPEDIC MEMORY FOAM DOG BED” months ago, and I must confess, it’s a Wonderful dog bed, very supportive for older dogs. Quality product one which I would always recommend highly. Our dog gets a very good night sleep in it and it is large enough for her, she is a German Shepherd who has some arthritis and also had a tendency to move about the room during the night; now once in her bed she snores her head off along with us (lol!), so we all get a good nights sleep.
Awesome post Janelle.
Regards!
KOPEKS makes a wonderful dog bed, and it’s good to know that your German Shepherd is getting a great night’s sleep on it.
Neither of our dogs snore, but when my daughter’s dog, Chief, stays with us, his snoring can rival my husband at his worst, lol!
Ah, this is really good. I have needed an orthopaedic bed for my pooch for a while now that’ll give him the right support seeing that he is getting older and abit weaker. The reviews for all this beds are nice but I think I’ll go for the KOPEKS support seeing that it’s cheap and has is really spacious. I’d share your post with my dog loving friends too.
The KOPEKS bed is a great choice and will give your dog the support he needs!
hi Janelle
My 2 wee girls are 13 and 10 and I am looking at buying them both an orthopaedic bed after reading through this post.
Their beds are getting a bit tatty and they good do with a new one to support and nurture them while they sleep
I love the fact that there is no fermyldahyde in the products as I wouldn’t touch them if this was the case so thank you
Having good quality construction with no chemicals is definitely a priority for me as well. Good luck with finding the right beds for your girls!
It’s nice to learn about these orthopedic dog beds. I didn’t knew they even existed, it’s good to learn about it so thanks for shari g this article.
I will share this to my friend who’s dog had a leg injury and has been irritable since then. I think this might help her dog to sleep comfortably.
Our bed was wonderful for our dog after her surgery, so I have no doubt that a good orthopedic bed could help her dog be more comfortable. Just like all of us, it’s easy to be irritable if you can’t get a good night sleep!
Finally, Shelly would have to leave the comfort of my bed to just me alone and stop sharing it with me. Mind you, Shelly is the name of my dog. She grew up to my cuddling so she got addicted to sleeping on my bed and I’ve tried getting her a cushion to which she doesn’t sleep on. Due to her weight now, she’s becoming somewhat crushing and I need to get her a bed. Thankfully, this orthopedic beds give great comfort going by what I read through this post. If I were to buy, I think I would go for the Dogbed4less bed.
That’s an excellent choice and definitely a good quality bed. Both of our German Shepherds liked to sleep on our bed with us, but it got crowded even with a king-sized bed! Luckily, when we got the orthopedic dog beds, our big male loves his and doesn’t want to sleep anywhere else.
Our female still wants to sleep right in between my husband and I just like when she was a puppy. But her bed gets good use in my husband’s garage man cave, lol, because she just loves being out there with him.
I hope your dog loves her new bed!
Really good review,
I am definitely going to look into these beds!
You even featured my breed of dog.. ?
I’m glad you found it helpful, and good luck in finding the perfect bed!
A few fast back I was thinking of buying my dog a comfortable place to sleep on that doesn’t involve my couches all the time. He likes sleeping on my couches and when I shout her, she gives me that puppy dog eyes.
She is currently pregnant so that Why I was thinking about buying a decent bed made for a dog to sleep on. And once the puppies come, I’ll buy a separate one for them.
I like the barksbar snuggle sleeper. It looks really comfortable enough for my dog, but will jabbering refer back to this post in a few hours.
Thank you for sharing this collection for beds for dogs and all the best to you.
Congratulations on having puppies soon! The BarksBar sleeper is a great bed and would be an excellent choice for your new mama. All the best to you as well!
Hi Janelle
I stumbled upon your website when looking for something else (thank Uncle Google), but because I love dogs too, I read your About page…
My goodness, I never heard about orthopedic dog beds before! I would probably have laughed, thinking they are playing the fool with me.
Reading through the comments, I saw your reply to Jaime about your sister’s dog that slept better on its orthopedic bed – amazing!
I am so glad I read this article, even though I don’t have a dog at the moment, I will tell my friends about this and send them to come read about it.
Wishing you and your lovely pooches a happy day! 😉
Sharlee
I’m so glad you stumbled upon my site, lol! Orthopedic dog beds are a passion of mine now since I’ve seen the results firsthand. After Sasha’s surgery, the vet told us to expect that she’ll be more prone to arthritis in that leg as she gets older. So keeping her weight down and making sure that she doesn’t sleep with pressure points are both crucial to keeping her healthy and pain free. Just like humans, dogs of any age and in any health will benefit from a great bed.
Thank you so much for stopping by!
Hi Janelle
Funny that you mentions it, because that was exactly my thought when I read your article, that, “just like us humans” need a good bed, they need a good one as well.
It also made me wonder whether that is why so many dogs prefer to sleep with their owners on the bed? While we tend to think it is because they love us so much and wants to be close to us (which may be part of the reason, no doubt), I was wondering whether it isn’t more because of the comfortable bed?
Although I loved having my dog with me on my bed at night, it did sometimes hamper my comfortable and deep sleep (especially when she kicked her little paws into my ribs when she was dreaming – she was such a little sweetheart!). Did you find that they are less prone to sharing your bed with you, now that Sasha and Tahlen have their own orthopedic dog beds?
Wishing you a lovely day!
Sharlee
I believe that it’s probably a little bit of both–loving us and loving a comfortable bed! Sasha has always slept between my husband and I and continues to do so–I don’t know what we’d do without a king-size bed, lol. Tahlen, on the other hand, sleeps on his orthopedic bed every night without fail.
But we were able to put Sasha’s orthopedic bed to good use in the garage. My husband has created a pretty great man cave out there (with a bigger TV than we have in the house!), so Sasha loves to sleep on her bed out there instead of the concrete floor. Have a wonderful day as well!
Thanks for sharing this. One does not realize how important it is to have a good dog bed!
You are so right!
I have a 16 year old beagle mix with arthritis so this page comes in perfect timing. She has pain in her hips and the vet gave her a cortisone shot which has helped a bunch, but I think the memory foam Kopecks with head rest will work the best for her.
Thanks so much and best of luck!
I’m so glad and hope you find the best bed for your beagle! I wish I had known about orthopedic dog beds years ago when I had my 14 year old Labrador, Malcolm. He also suffered from arthritis, and the kind of bed I have now for our dogs would’ve made a big difference in his comfort.
Thank you for stopping by!
Great information! I have a 16 year old beagle mix, who has arthritis and she is in desperate need of a good bed. This helps a lot!
What a bunch of spoiled pooches, lol. I want a bed like they have. Awesome article, thanks for the info, will pass it on to any friends who may be looking for some top notch doggy beds. Do you think any of the doggy beds would be suitable for a doggy as large as a St. Bernard or even a Great Dane?
For a St. Bernard or Great Dane, I’d definitely look at the Big Barker beds. Their giant bed is 60″ x 48″ and is a very high quality bed designed to hold up to the largest of dogs. We have 2 of the extra large size for our German Shepherds, and they can totally stretch out on them without hanging over.
In fact, when Sasha came home from surgery, I put the 2 beds together on the living room floor and slept with her for 2 nights on them. Definitely a pampered pooch, lol!
Hi Janelle. This info is just what I need. My friend works at the vet and has been looking for some orthopedic dog bed. We can’t get it from our country and since I’ll be traveling to the US fairly soon, I am planning to order a few to bring home.
Would you know if any of these models are packed in compression format – just like those bed-in-a-box they have for the human market? It would make cost and carrying a lot easier.
Thanks!
I know that most of these beds are packaged very efficiently and expand to their full size after opening. If there is a particular bed you’re interested in, I’ll be happy to research it and find out the dimensions and weight of their bed for shipping. Thank you for stopping by!
Hi, Janelle.
This is an interesting post for me to read.
My dog is getting older and while he slept on a firm mattress for most of his life, I can now appreciate the importance of an orthopedic bed as he ages.
I am pleased that you mention that ugly word, … formaldehyde.
I will also be more aware of the mattress construction and the materials that compose it.
There is perhaps no one that appreciates a gift more than your dog.
What else do you pamper your pooch with?
Paul
Hi Paul!
An aging dog can definitely benefit from an orthopedic bed to keep them well rested and active longer, and there are many beds constructed with quality materials.
My dogs are definitely pampered, I will fully admit it! Our male German Shepherd is very picky about his treats. So if he knows there is a better treat in the cupboard, he lays the one I gave him on the floor, paws the cabinet and gives me a sharp bark to let me know he should get another one. If I give him back the first one, he refuses it and jumps on the couch in a big huff. My husband is a big softie and will give him the other treat every time, lol!
Hi Janelle,
Great article!
I didn’t know that orthopedic dog beds exist. A few months ago I bought two beds for my dogs, and I regret it now that I see these beds. One of my dogs leaks urine accidentally and I each time it happens, I have to wash the entire bed with soap and a brush. That’s really annoying. Plus they are not orthopedic:(
I really like the PetFusion bed, it seems to be of high quality, comfortable and it’s water resistant. That’s exactely what I need for my dogs!
I will check this further on Amazon right now!
Thank you for this excellent post!
Orthopedic dog beds with removable covers is a must around our house and it makes things so much easier! I’m glad you found the post helpful!
Hi,
What a great article to read about quality beds for dogs!
I’m a dog lover and I have had many dogs in my life, from the smallest Chihuahua to some large breeds like labrador and others, and I never though about dog beds and how important can a bed be for a dog.
After reading your article is clear for me, a good bed will help to keep a dog in better shape.
Dog owners should read your article before going to buy a new dog bed and pick one just because the color or the fabric design, we should think about what is best for our dogs.
Next time I get a dog bed, I will pick the best for my little one!
Thank you so much for commenting! Until I had the vet recommend an orthopedic bed, I didn’t know they made them for dogs either. Not only do I see a difference that having a quality bed makes, they last so much longer than any of the regular beds I used to buy, so it is a win-win all the way around!
Hi! Thank you for sharing and review these orthopedic beds! A high-quality bed is very important for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. It distributes their weights evenly, which put less pressure on their joints.
I like those beds with covers that can be removed and washed. My dog always takes his treats back to his bed to enjoy but ends up creating a mess. I had to throw away a couple of beds. Now I will definitely consider an orthopedic bed with removable cover. Thank you for the review and recommendations!
You are welcome! A removable cover is a must at my house too, since both of our dogs love to run in the creek. It’s a feature i always look for. Thank you for stopping by!
I hadn’t thought about the need for dogs to have orthopedic beds, but it makes sense as they get older it’s going to be better on their joints and healthier overall. Thanks for the recommendations!
You are welcome! My passion for these beds was proven when my sister bought an orthopedic bed for her 12 year old lab, Lily. She noticed that Lily was getting up almost every hour while trying to sleep and moving from spot to spot. So she invested in a great quality orthopedic bed and saw the difference in Lily’s sleeping the very first night. Lily was able to get into a more restorative sleep for several hours each night and her energy level during the day definitely increased. I saw the success story firsthand!
This was a good article. At the end of the day, your dog will decide whether he likes his bed or not. We got our Lab a circular pillow bed that he really loves. Then we got him a second one made of foam, and he hated that bed! Never slept in it. Ultimately bit it to pieces.
But you expertly reviewed each one. ANd believe me, I’m sure a lot of dog owners will take notice.
Thank you for a well written, interesting post!

Thank you for your kind words! I grew up with Labs, and they’re one of my favorite dogs. Glad yours loves his bed, and you are so right, a dog will be the final judge on what he wants to sleep on!
